Flavio Hlabangwane, 26, appeared briefly in the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto yesterday.

He is accused of murder after his new girlfriend has found a pair of arms and legs stored in the deep freezer compartment of his fridge.

Hlabangwane had organised a family gathering and was due to see his mother on the day of his arrest.

He wanted to announce the good news that he bought an apartment and wanted them to see it.

His mother, Grace, was over the moon with the news.

He was a spark, not only within his family but also within his community.

He is clever, but has no friends since he is introverted.

On Friday, he wrote his last of 13 exams related to actuarial science.

His family home had three rooms, but after graduating, he expanded it by another five rooms.

His room has ten best academic trophies lined up against the wall. .

He obtained 100% for mathematics when he passed matrc in 2012. That is in addition to three other distinctions he received. He was a head boy at the Immaculata Secondary School.

The company known as De Beers paid for his Saturday school classes from grade 10 to 12.

No one in his family knew where he lived.

He had lied to his mother that he lived in Randburg, but his mother was surprised when she discovered that he was staying in Protea Glen.

” I just went to him and hugged him from behind. He turned around and hugged me back and cried, saying he was sorry,” said the mother.

Over the weekend, Hlabangwane’s landlord in Protea Glen said that he knew his girlfriend and that he saw her often since he moved into his property in July last year.

“We knew the girl. We were familiar with her. But we do not know if it was [her] body parts which were found in my son’s rented room. Just like everyone else, we are waiting for the DNA results to confirm who the body parts belong to,” said Grace.

Police spokesperson Brig Brenda Muridili said the body parts will be sent to the forensic science laboratory for identification.

Grace described her son as humble and quiet, and said that every fibre of her being failed to comprehend the allegations against him.

Hlabangwane, who was trying to end his life at the time of his arrest by stabbing himself in the neck with a sharp object, seemed a bit confused in court.

He told the court that he would be acquiring the services of the Legal Aid Board.

He looked around at the courtroom gallery as though he expected to see a familiar face. However, no relatives were present.

He was remanded in custody until 22 November 2021 to apply for legal representation with Legal Aid South Africa (LASA).
