A suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery gang is on the run after police stormed what is believed to be their secret safe house in Daveyton, East Rand.
In a dramatic intelligence-driven operation, Gauteng SAPS and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) swooped on the property and uncovered a frightening arsenal consisting of seven rifles, one pistol, reflector jackets and a hijacked BMW X5.
But the suspects escaped moments before officers closed in, triggering a massive overnight manhunt.
Police believe the gang is linked to several violent crimes across Gauteng and say they were preparing for more deadly attacks.
Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane praised the operation, saying police are tightening the noose around ruthless CIT robbery syndicates.
“Their days are numbered. We will hunt them down, arrest them and ensure they face the full might of the law,” she warned.
Cash-in-transit robberies are among South Africa’s most dangerous crimes, often involving heavily armed gangs willing to shoot their way to millions of rand.
Police say investigations are continuing, and more arrests are expected as detectives hunt down every suspect connected to the gang.
