ST LUCIA, KZN – What was meant to be a holy trip for a church cleansing and baptism turned into a trip to the police station after a bishop was caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma, Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers stopped the bishop on the R618 near St Lucia while members of his congregation followed behind in other vehicles.
Officers allegedly smelled alcohol and conducted a breathalyser test, which reportedly produced a reading of 0.360% Blood Alcohol Content.
Instead of arguing with officers, the bishop quoted 1 John 1:9, saying:
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
The bishop was arrested on allegations of drunk driving.
The arrest formed part of the #NenzaniLaEzweni road safety campaign, during which 33 motorists were arrested for alleged drunk driving over the weekend.
