Learner shot in the classroom

A grade 10 pupil  at Fusion Secondary School in Lotus Gardens, west of Pretoria, is fighting for her life after she was hit by a stray bullet on Tuesday morning.

According to the Educators’ Union of South Africa (Eusa) there was a shootout outside the school at about 11am on Tuesday.

Eusa’s spokesperson Kabelo Mahlobogwane said it was reported that two unknown men wielding automatic rifles were seen chasing and shooting at a man who also had a rifle just outside the school yard.

“The learners started screaming and ran for cover. Unfortunately, at that point a grade 10 learner was shot by a bullet that came through the window in her classroom. She was hit in the lower part of her body. She lay bleeding for about an hour waiting for an ambulance,” Mahlobogwane said.

He said the union was shocked to hear that the principal allegedly ordered the traumatized pupils and teachers to return to classes and continue with the lessons.

“It was senseless and ruthless for the principal to act in such an inhumane manner.

“The principal’s conduct was uncalled for and proper steps need to be taken against her.

“As a result, we are calling for the immediate closure of the schools until all staff and learners have received counselling.”
