Lefa Chego has finally been sentenced for murdering his girlfriend, Zama Maphisa yesterday at Middleburg High Court.
“I agree with the Victim Impact statement by Masiphephe Network that this act is irreversible. Their statement clearly shows how deeply the society is wounded by this and it continues to suffer because of GBV.
“The body of the deceased is still missing. I aggree with prosecution, you are selfish. Your level of selfishness and self regard is very high, and you clearly have no regard for human life,” Judge Thando Mangke.
Mangke said it was the opinion of “this court that the way that you killed her, you never ever loved her”.
“GBV has brought Mpumalanga to its knees and you are further making it a warzone and tursnish its integrity by bringing a woman from another province and murder her here in this province escalating our statistics.
“I will be name-cleaning Mpumalanga later in this sentencing.
“You have not shown any remorse. Not even once have you apologised, not to the family and not to the community of Alex.
“You have not even paid for the funeral. You planned to kill her, but you didn’t even plan for her funeral arrangments?
” You are so selfish that even after killing the mother of you child, you tried to kill yourself. No regard to your two month old child.”
Chego was condemnation to life imprisonment for murder and 5 years for defeating ends of Justice, which shall run concurrently.
