The Nigel Magistrates’ Court granted bail to a 37-year-old mother from Dunnottar to Nigel.

The woman faces charges of premeditated murder and attempted murder. She allegedly killed her 16-year-old son, by giving him poison.

The woman allegedly poisoned her 7-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old boy on 6 June 2022 after being scammed with a large amount of money.

NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said that after giving them poison, she drove with them to the Free State Province.

“When they got to Frankfort in Free State, the children started falling ill. She then took them to the nearest hospital.

“Upon arrival, the boy child passed on, and the girl was admitted and has been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since then,” said Mahanjana.

Mahanjana said when the doctor realized that the children were poisoned, he called the police, who interviewed the accused.

“The accused mother admitted to poisoning the children, because she was scammed with a large amount of money, and had no means to take care of the children, even to pay school fees.

“She was then arrested and transferred to Nigel where the offence took place.

“When police went to her place, a Tupperware container containing poison was found in the kitchen,” said Mahanjana.

The suspect told the court she was planning to plead not guilty to the charges against her.

The matter was adjourned to 24 August 2022 for further investigation.
