The alleged monster was arrested last night, sources say.

A 26-year-old woman, Marriam Makane from Mabopane, was brutally murdered, allegedly by her boyfriend on the weekend.

Her body was dumped at the graveyard in Garankuwa. She was stabbed multiple times with a bottle.

The perpetrator allegedly tied her to the car and drove around before loosening the body and drove over her with the victim’s three year old baby watching.

It is alleged that the police refused to make the arrest after the perpetrator abused her and damaged her family’s home in the past.

The suspect was arrested in Mmakau close to Garankuwa.

In the meantime, the Lady of Peace Community Foundation (LOPECO) in collaboration with UN Women, Southern African Multi-Country Office has initiated a programme to honour and celebrate actors and actions being done to ensure women and girls live violence-free lives.

LOPECO has identified 16 community actions aimed at ending violence against women and girls across communities in Gauteng. These community actions exist on the frontlines of efforts to end violence against women and girls. What makes this award ceremony more special is that these actors have access to meagre resources but wake up every day and commit their time and energy to ending violence against women and girls, thus according to the statement released by LOPECO.

This event is also located under the UNiTE by 2030 Campaign to End Violence against Women initiative (UNiTE). It forms part of the annual UN contribution to the global 16 Days of Activism Campaign. UNiTE calls for global action to increase awareness, galvanise advocacy efforts and share knowledge and innovations to end VAWG once and for all.

“UNiTE calls on governments, development actors, civil society, women’s organizations, young people, the private sector, the media and the entire UN system to join forces in addressing the global pandemic of violence against women and girls.

“The UN emphasises supporting and investing in strong, autonomous women’s rights organizations and feminist movements as a key to ending violence against women and girls,” says LOPECO.

The theme for the 2022 UNiTE Campaign calls for more support for activism to prevent violence against women and girls:

“UNiTE! Activism to end violence against women & girls!”

This awards ceremony is meant to honour, recognize, and acknowledge those on the front lines doing the work.

It is expected that this appreciation and acknowledgement will encourage other stakeholders to act against GBVF in their localities and discourage by-standerism in communities.
