Over 2,000 suspects apprehended for different crimes in Gauteng

Over the weekend, Gauteng police dealt severely with the criminals and arrested 2,000 people.

 

The arrests occurred when police tracked down wanted suspects, carried out roadblocks, raided taverns and made stops and searches, among other crime prevention initiatives.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, four hundred and eighty-five (485) of those suspects were arrested in Ekurhuleni where the Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, led the integrated Operation O Kae Molao.

 

Masondo said the operation included the road blocks at Ivory Park on Saturday night, 20 August 2022.

 

He said 32 suspects were arrested for being undocumented foreign nationals, 28 for driving while impaired by alcohol and one for possessing an unauthorized firearm.

According to him, three vehicles were impounded, three unauthorized shebeens were closed and seven were arrested for smuggling and possession of drugs.

 

“Other suspects were arrested during the tracing of wanted suspects who committed offences that include rape, murder, assault, housebreaking and theft, armed robbery, fraud, sexual assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

 

“Furthermore, seven hundred and seventy (770) people were arrested in Johannesburg District, four hundred and thirty-five (435) in Tshwane District, one hundred and eighty-four (184) in West Rand District and one hundred eighty-two (182) in Sedibeng District.”

 

Masondo said some of the suspects were released after paying a guilty fine while others had to appear before various magistrates’ courts starting on Monday, August 22, 2022.
