#NOTINMYNAME condemns the senseless killing of 23-year-old Sobongile Smomo from Mamelodi West who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend on 16 June.

Smomo was allegedly killed by her boyfriend after a scuffle. Her body was found by the police in his room.

The alleged perpetrator was remanded in custody when he appeared in court on Monday. He is expected back in court on 30 June for a formal bail application.

Secretary-General Thema Masango
said: “As #NOTINMYNAME, we want to call on the justice system not to grant bail to the perpetrator.

“Furthermore, we want the courts to hand down the harshest sentence available.

“We also want the courts to deal with this case speedily so that the family can find closure and we will not rest until justice has been served.”

Masango added that it was worrying that femicide cases in South Africa were 5× higher than anywhere in the world.

He urged South African men to introspect and stop being at war with women in this country.
