The case against Oupa Nkele(41) was postponed by the Mogwase Magistrates’ Court to 17 January 2022 for the legal aid consultation and a possible bail application.

Nkele’s legal aid lawyer asked the court for a postponement to conduct an appropriate consultation with him, and the state did not oppose this application. He is charged with attempted murder and rape.

Preliminary police reports revealed that Nkele, who is currently separated from his wife, called and made arrangements for them to meet to discuss a pressing matter.

Henry Mamothame
NPA spokesperson said, in accordance with the agreement, Nkele collected the wife from her parental home on Wednesday afternoon, 29 December 2021.

He then drove to a local shopping center, but switched directions and headed to their home in Lerome village near Mogwase outside of Rustenburg.

“An argument ensued after the pair arrived in Lerome. Nkele allegedly assaulted and strangled the wife with a rope, then poured her with petrol and eventually raped her.

“Subsequently, he allegedly forced the victim into his car and drove away with her, but the victim managed to unlock the car and jumped out,”Mamothame said.

According to the police report, the victim was aided by a Good Samaritan who took her to the police station where charges of attempted murder and rape were laid.

This led to the swift arrest of Nkele on Thursday, 30 December 2021.
