Colonel Brenda Muridili told the Alex Reporter that the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lt Gen Khehla Sithole, sent his condolences to the family and friends of Sergeant Moshela Mokgoba.

This after Mokgoba was shot on 23 March 2021 at about 19:00, in Alexandra on duty, allegedly by the taxi owner known to the police.

Muridili said the province has already put in place the 72-hour activation plan and mobilized all the resources needed to investigate this incident.

“It is reported that the sergeant and his co-workers were following a suspicious vehicle on 3rd Street, near Pan Africa Mall, and that there was a traffic jam.

“So he and a co-worker proceeded to approach the said vehicle on foot, but gunshots were fired from that vehicle,” said Muridili.

“Makgoba was pronounced killed at the scene. The suspect, whom the police know, is being pursued,” she said.

Muridili indicated that the province assured Sithole that it was providing the deceased member’s family with all the support they needed during this bereavement period.

Members at the station, according to Muridili also received counseling from the Health and Wellbeing of Employees.

Chairperson of the Alexandra Community Policing Forum (CPF), Chris Mabunda, stated that the suspect is a well-known taxi owner of the local taxi association.

“As Alexandra’s CPF, we are deeply concerned about the murder of our police officers or any other member of the community.

“We know that his gun was stolen by the suspect.

“It is very bad news that a husband or a father of children is murdered by our own business owners.

“May his soul rest in internal peace and condolences to Makgoba’s family and all members of the SAPS,” Mabunda said.
