While some believe that working for a community media is fruitless and time-consuming, Nokulunga Sibisi (22) knew that grassroots media would eventually lead her to greener pastures.

The Gomora woman, based in First Park, Tsutsumani, was on over the moon, yet shocked and excited when she received the unexpected news that she had secured a job with the SABC.

“It was not easy for the process I went through before, but I’m glad I made it,” the woman of the moment shares with Alex Reporter.

Nokulunga, born in KwaZulu-Natal Ladysmith, has three years experience in the media sector.

“My journey with Alex FM was very good. They groomed me from the scratch,” says a young lady who joined ‘Elevate Your Mind’ from media school with no practical experience.

“Alex FM showed me a way in a good manner. Although there were some difficult moments, I was determined, because I’m passionate about my career.”

She disclosed that she fell in love with the media at the age of twelve. “I would always listen to uKhozi FM News every 6 o’clock. It was at that moment that I realised I could read the news. Besides, I grew up with this thing, thinking that someday I’ll be on the radio.”

Nokulunga did her first NQF 5 Radio Production certificate at the Production House for Nyanyani called Aviwe BDS in Newtown.

“I also did Television Production at the Boston Medi House. I was helped by Alex FM with a bursary.

“I’m so happy today that I’m going to be working on our national TV called SABC,” she said.

Alex FM station manager , Takalane ‘TK’ Nemangowe told our news team that he was so proud and happy for Nokulunga and wished her the best in her new role.

” We are also working hard to produce more young people, particularly young women in the media space, who are coming from Alex, to the world,” said TK.

TK said he was pleased that the hard work of the station has yielded successful results.

” Alex FM is a developmental institution. Ours is to take raw talent; rough diamonds, polish them and ready them for mainstream.”

He stated that the key role of Alex FM was to inform, educate and entertain.

“But, our secondary role is to take young people, absorb them into our system, and train them thoroughly for the mainstream media.”
