“Stop being afraid of the spirit world, because you will still go there.

“The more you delay, the more your life falls apart! Be the bravest to accept the calling and help your family members out of misery,” warns Juliet Mashele.

Juliet grew up as a different child, with a different way of thinking and approach to life.

When she was 8 years old, her dreams were different and terrifying.

She would see people she had not met before. But when she described them to her elders, she knew they were ancestors. And these people had beads of animals.

She said she would wake up early in the morning, sit on her bed and begin talking alone.

“Mind you, I wasn’t even listening to what I was saying. Only to discover that what I was saying was some sort of prophecy.

“Then I started seeing spirits which I thought were ghosts. One day I was up all night for not being able to sleep.

“Suddenly, I saw an old man with long pure white dreadlocks. He was wearing ancestral clothes called (Ibhayi le ingwe yamabala).”

He told her his name was Ngwenyama. When she heard that man speak, she jumped to the other side of the bed because she was afraid.

“He said ‘Isikhathi sesi phelile Gogo’. He then started singing a song, saying ‘sabela gogo wehh sabela uyabizwa’ , then he disappeared.”

She says she could hear drums in her head and feet. The next morning he returned, but this time she saw him as a shadow on the wall and she heard a voice saying “your name is Khethabahle”.

It was at this time that she began to neglect her name Juliet and wanted people to call her Khethabahle. However, others called her Khethabakhulu.

“I had a 60-year-old Gogo trapped inside my 8-year- old body.”

Mysterious things occurred. She began to hear things which others could not hear.

“I saw things people couldn’t see. I foretold things that really happened,” she said.

Gogo Khethabahle says the journey was not easy. But she had to accept the calling as she was tired of being emotionally drained.

And she was tired of fighting every day from the morning to the sunset with spirits.

When she told her grandmother that she was leaving, she became frightened and told her that she was coming with her.

“By that time I was in Mpumalanga. I went all the way from Gugulethu to Mamelodi. When we got off (from the taxi), I started walking ( mind you I didn’t know where I was going), only to find out that I was entering a Sangoma’s house .

“I stayed and refused to go back home. Most of my family were okay with my calling , but some were a little embarrassed and forced me to hide who I am, but I refused.”

Gogo Khethabahle, aged 18, grew up in Alexandra. However, she hails from Mpumalanga in Gugulethu, Katjibane.

The reason why she accepted her calling at a very young age was because she hated seeing people suffer.

“My love for people and nature is unspeakable. I’m very kind,” she tells Mashamba Media, adding that when she was young, she had solutions for problems.

She was initiated in 2016 with two girls who were older than her.

She recounts that the obstacles that she faced throughout her life made her stronger emotionally, physically and mentally throughout the journey of initiation.

Her body started being affected by aches and pains of those around her because she felt pity for others and totally forgot about herself.

She initiation is not a walk in the park, there are many rules to follow because it demands repentance.

“Initiation has rules, and those rules have to be adhered to, because those are the rules that are going to help you out.”

However, she had lots of information prior to her initiation because she grew up in a family of traditional healers.

Her granny would make her more familiar with the tradition.

We wanted to check if she had time for a relationship and she told us she is in relation to a man who is also a healer .

“He’s all that I’ve always wanted. Our daughter is five months old.”

She can help people who need anything except for those who want to eliminate others.

“I was not trained to kill, but to heal. That’s what God sent me to do.”

She adviced young people to take calling very seriously.
