The Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) in the North West has on Wednesday expressed concern regarding the carnage on public roads.

This follows horrific road crashes that claimed nine lives in two separate accidents along the R503 Lichtenburg-Mahikeng road in less than three days.

The first heart wrenching accident in which six lives were lost and several other injured occurred on Sunday afternoon near Uitspan Doring Farm while the recent one occurred yesterday about 500 meters from Total Garage.

Convenor of the MRM Provincial Interim Committee, Pastor Lesiba Kgwele on behalf of the apolitical civil society led organization, has called for intensified road traffic law enforcement, increased patrols on a routine basis as well as visibility including speed control to clamp down on reckless driving and speeding on the accident prone road.

“We wish to convey our deepest condolences to families that lost their loved ones in the accidents and wish survivors who are hospitalized as well as those recuperating from home a speedy recovery,” said Kgwele.

Kgwele pointed out that MRM had convened an urgent cleaning and prayer ceremony to be held at the accident scene near Uitspan Doring Farm on Friday September 2023 as from 11:00-12:30.

“It is at times like these that we need to unite and rally behind traumatized families that need spiritual support as well as to ensure that they receive the necessary psychosocial support,” he emphasized.

He stressed that reducing lawlessness on public roads required a change in driver behavior as the first step.

Kgwele said the initiative would be led by MRM in partnership with the office of the Premier, Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Road Accident Fund, South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), Ngaka Modiri Molema District municipality, Ditsobotla local municipality, Mahikeng local municipality, traditional leaders, religious fraternal organisations, faith based organisations, and other civil society organisations.
