City Power and Johannesburg Emergency Management Services demonstrated bravery in fighting the horrible fires in the Johannesburg CBD.

According to City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, the repairs commenced well in the underground tunnels since the morning, with the damaged infrastructure including cables mopped up and brought to the surface.

Mangena said the fire, which started on Monday morning, caused extensive damage to about a kilometer from the underground tunnel.

He said that the cleaning would continue until the end of Wednesday afternoon, after which the laying of the new cables and accompanying joints would begin.

“We still hope to finish the repairs and restore power to the rest of the affected customers, including Selby and Westgate by Friday – if all goes according to plan.

“In the meantime, most affected areas within the CBD were restored through backfeeding from the Van Beek substation. They include Commissioner Str, Fox Str, and Market Str.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” Mangena said.
