When she was in high school, Mmapudi Rosina Shiko used to make a terrible noise in class regularly. And that got her in trouble with her teachers most of the time because she was always on the noisemakers list.

After graduating from Tielelo Secondary School, she moved to Johannesburg to pursue her lifelong dream of studying in the media.

She completed her diploma in media practices and her love for radio grew bigger.

When she first got invited to the community radio station to co-host a teen show at Lephalale FM, listeners fell in love with her voice. They encouraged her to use her voice to a greater extent.

She was the host of a hip pop show on a campus radio. This led her to work for several radio stations, including Lesedi FM, 1912 FM, Thobela FM and numerous other local radio stations.

Black rose, as Rosina is affectionately known, is from Lephalale in Limpopo province and she grew up in Marapong township.

The gifted rapper, dancer, actress, presenter, poet, songwriter was born in August 1995. She moved around a lot and explored too much when she was young.

“I find my inner peace through writing songs, ” she said.

She has not been discouraged by the lack of opportunities. And as many peers put their dreams on hold, she continued to experiment in the media discipline and discovered the diversity in this dynamic and colorful industry.

As a result, she embraced and recorded her music in the Hip Hop genre.

Her passion and love for music started when she attended the Belgerivier boarding school, where she was part of a choir.

She attended drama classes because she loved music and acting, which led to her writing songs at the age of 14.

She ended up becoming more confident in the music and herself, even though her parents were opposed to the career she had chosen. And that didn’t stop her from becoming passionate about music.

Black Rose first appeared on a local TV soap, Skeem Saam as a featured role. That was after she began her acting career in a local theatre production Evergreen Art Centre before going on to the big screen.

She then attended theatre and film workshops where she was given more opportunities to participate in numerous productions, both local and international.

She has appeared in television series like Generation, The River, The Estate and has done a few shows on Netflix and Showmax.

Asked about her love for the media, she said: ” I’ve loved media from an early age. I have always wanted to be in broadcasting space. I will get fascinated every time I’d watch the news and listen to radio shows.

“I wanted to be able to have my own publication and deliver news to people from our own narrative. Which is why I’ve started my media company titled BR BR Media & Projects.

“I was doing radio since I was in grade 10. After matriculating I then moved from Limpopo to Johannesburg to study media, which I later graduated with Journalism and Radio Productions.”

She advised young people to use the media space to stay on their ground and not to push the propaganda that is pushed by many media.

“Give the people what they want.”
