MMC for public safety Mgcini Tshwaku said the fire at Setjwetla informal settlement started in the early hours of Sunday, with preliminary investigations suggesting that the fire was likely caused by faulty electrical connections.

“The City of Johannesburg’s emergency management services (EMS) firefighters swiftly responded to a distress call regarding multiple shack fires in Alexandra.

“Tragically, four shacks were consumed by the blaze, resulting in the loss of one male life and leaving another resident injured,” said Tshwaku.

He said affected families have found temporary shelter with the assistance of their friends.

Tshwaku urges residents, particularly those residing in informal settlement to be cautious when using heated appliances and ensure they are never left unattended, especially during load shedding.

“By taking safety precautions, we can work together to prevent similar fire incidents from occurring,” the MMC said.

Earlier last week, a man and his girlfriend burnt to death at Maponyane Village near Setjwetla. It’s believed that the gas stove could have contributed to the blaze.
