64 residents burnt to death in a horrific fire in Johannesburg

The death toll rises to 64 after a five-storey Osindiso building on the corner of Albert and Delver streets in Marshalltown caught alight earlier this morning.

More than 50 occupants are reported died.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services Firefighters are currently responding to a five storey building reported earlier on this morning in Johannesburg Innercity,Corner Alberts and Delvers around 01h30

City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services said on arrival, firefighters started to evacuate all the people out of the building while conducting Firefighting operations,

He confirmed that 64 people died as the result of the fire and more than 50 people were injured with some transported to various health care facilities for further medical care.

“At this stage, the cause of the fire incident is still a subject of investigations

Officials from City of Johannesburg Disaster Management have been activated to start facilitating relief for affected families,” said Mulaudzi.

The building is said to be hijacked and occupants were illegally paying R1500 per months.

Mulaudzi said he has never seen anything like this since he started working at that department.
