South Africa’s winter initiation season has once again been plunged into tragedy after the official death toll climbed to 43 young initiates, leaving devastated families asking one heartbreaking question: “Why are our sons not coming home alive?”
The latest figures reveal that Mpumalanga recorded the highest number of deaths with 18, followed by the Eastern Cape with 14, while fatalities were also reported in the North West, Limpopo, Gauteng and the Free State.
Authorities say the situation is alarming. During the season, 75 initiates were hospitalised, 180 were rescued from illegal initiation schools, 58 illegal schools were uncovered and 42 were shut down. Police have also opened 150 criminal cases and arrested 40 suspects.
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa described the deaths as preventable and urged parents to ensure their children attend only legally registered initiation schools.
As another initiation season ends in tears for dozens of families, South Africans are once again demanding tougher action against illegal initiation schools and those whose negligence continues to cost young lives.
