Cricket Regional Explosion (CDR) is development program that focuses on a regional method. CDR wants to make sure every school in a region plays cricket and children from that region has an opportunity.

The program is the brainchild of Champions Drive, an NPO that was formed to assist sport development on the ground in underprivileged communities, with a mission to grow cricket in schools and create employment and vision to have this program in other sporting codes.

The NPO Champions Drive is founded by David Mashiyi who has been involved with the sport for years such as cricket, rugby and hockey.

He then went on to become coach for Cricket and Rugby. Originally from Cape Town, he currently resides in Johannesburg.

He went on to stop coaching because he wanted to help transform sport, particularly cricket, by developing disadvantaged communities. He was approached by a NPO known as ISE to form part of their organization.

He worked there for five years as a volunteer and quit the organization in September.

He then approached the Gauteng Department of Education to operate the cricket program. In a short period of time, the program was set up and ready for launch.

“Regional Cricket Explosion is efficient, least costly and flexible method. We target a region and form district team. Wanderers Cricket Club and Champion Drive are working together to fix cricket development in District 9.

“They will put their resources in developing young players from schools in that district. Players who are talented will be incubated in the Wanderers Cricket Club,” Mashiyi said.

Mashiyi says all the schools will now participate in cricket and play schools league. According to him, the schools by district concerned will begin in Johannesburg with districts 9, 10, 14 and D11.

Their player will represent the district and the players will have club experience.

District 9 Alexandra Cluster: Iphutheng, Ikage, Bovet, Gordon. Central Cluster are Lyndhurst, Glen Hazel, AH Jack and Orchards.
