ALEXANDRA – Just days after tensions threatened to tear Alexandra apart, the sound of angry voices was replaced by cheers, whistles and roaring celebrations as football and netball became the medicine a wounded community desperately needed.
The Maisha Molepo Foundation pulled off an unforgettable community sports festival at 3 Square Sports Centre recently proving that one ball can sometimes do what politics and protests cannot – bring people together.
Men, women, gogos and energetic youngsters flooded the sports grounds, putting their differences aside to battle it out on the field instead of in the streets. For one unforgettable day, Alexandra traded conflict for competition and fear for friendship.
The event, held in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day, saw the foundation donate soccer and netball kits with funding from the National Lottery Commission, giving local teams fresh hope and a reason to dream again.
Foundation founder Maisha Molepo said the mission was to restore unity in a community that has recently experienced deep divisions.
He wanted to honour Madiba by bringing people together through sport. “The smiles and excitement we witnessed showed us that we had touched lives,” he said.
The action on the field was explosive as Alex Veterans, Soweto Veterans, Alex Gogos and Soweto Gogos entertained passionate supporters, while young stars fought fearlessly for trophies and community pride.
Among the biggest winners were Happy Birds U17, whose coach David Lamola delivered a powerful message to Alexandra’s youth.
“Stay away from weapons, alcohol, drugs and bad company. Let football and education become your passport to a better future,” he urged.
But the day wasn’t only about goals and trophies. In a touching show of Ubuntu, the Maisha Molepo Foundation, together with the Thami Xalasha Foundation, also handed food parcels to elderly residents, making sure no one was forgotten.
As Alexandra continues to face social challenges, the event sent a powerful message: when a community plays together, it stands together.
