The walls are closing in on alleged Tembisa Hospital tender kingpin Hangwani Maumela after the Johannesburg High Court granted a final forfeiture order allowing the State to seize assets worth R326 million allegedly linked to corruption at Tembisa Hospital.
The jaw-dropping haul includes six luxury mansions, with the most expensive Sandhurst property valued at more than R71 million, as well as eight high-end vehicles, including Lamborghinis, Bentleys and other luxury cars that have become symbols of the lavish lifestyle investigators say was built while billions were allegedly being siphoned from public healthcare.
The case centres on the alleged looting of about R2 billion through irregular Tembisa Hospital tenders. Prosecutors allege Maumela and companies linked to him benefited from inflated and unlawful contracts, while the hospital and taxpayers suffered massive losses.
Unlike earlier preservation orders, this final forfeiture order means the seized assets now belong to the State and can be sold at auction, with the proceeds expected to be recovered by the government.
Authorities have described the move as a major victory in the fight against corruption and the recovery of public funds.
Although the court has ordered the forfeiture of these assets, Hangwani Maumela has not been convicted of a criminal offence, and investigations and related legal processes are continuing.
