Tragedy has struck Limpopo after 14 people lost their lives in two devastating road crashes in the Sekhukhune District on Saturday, leaving families and communities in mourning.
According to Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Susani Violet Mathye, the first crash occurred on the R555 between Stoffberg and Rossenkraal in the Elias Motsoaledi Municipality.
The collision involved a Volkswagen Polo, a combi and a truck, claiming the lives of five people at the scene. Authorities say reckless driving cannot be ruled out, and investigations are continuing.
In the second tragedy, a Volkswagen Polo and a Toyota Tazz collided on Road D4370 between Phokwane and Mamphogo in the Makhuduthamaga Municipality.
Preliminary investigations indicate that speeding may have been a contributing factor. The horrific crash claimed the lives of nine people – four occupants of the Polo and five occupants of the Toyota Tazz.
A total of six people were injured in the two crashes and were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
“The dark cloud is hanging over Sekhukhune District, and on behalf of the Department and the people of Limpopo, I extend my sincere condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said MEC Mathye.
The Department has urged motorists to obey the rules of the road, avoid reckless driving, and take regular rest breaks during long journeys. Traffic officers have been deployed to monitor accident hotspots as investigations continue.
