A grieving Alexandra community will gather this Sunday for a candlelight ceremony in honour of five people who tragically lost their lives in a horrific crash on the N1.

The victims have been identified as Collins Maswanganyi, his wife Tintswalo, and their two children, Kuhlula and Katekani. Their neighbour, Extra Tlukani, who was travelling with them, also died in the devastating accident.

According to Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, the crash occurred near Mookgophong, close to Modimolle. It is believed that reckless driving led to the tragedy, with alcohol and drugs suspected to have played a role. Reports indicate that the driver, who has since been arrested, allegedly made an illegal U-turn, causing the fatal collision.

Funeral arrangements are underway, with Tlukani set to be laid to rest on Monday. Collins and his family will be buried on Saturday. All funerals will take place in Xikundu village, Malamulele, Limpopo.

A candlelight ceremony will be held on Sunday evening at “Busy Corner” in Alexandra Ext 7, where the Maswanganyi family and Tlukani lived as neighbours. Community members are expected to gather in large numbers to pay their respects.

Bro Collins was a well-known tavern owner and a respected figure in Alexandra. Despite running a business that sold alcohol, he was admired for his discipline, as he did not drink himself. His tavern became more than just a business — it was a cultural hub, especially for the Tsonga community.

He was particularly known for hosting Makhwaya events that brought people together, fostering unity and celebrating cultural pride. Many young entrepreneurs in the tavern industry looked up to him for inspiration, drawn to his humility, leadership, and commitment to uplifting others.

The tragic loss of the Maswanganyi family and their neighbour has left a deep wound in the community, with many still in shock.
