Alexandra’s rising digital creators were given the tools to turn creativity into opportunity during the successful “Think Bigger” Smartphone Content Creators Workshop, after two days of intensive training.

Founded by Thuso Mogotsi, the workshop focused on equipping aspiring content creators with practical skills in videography, camera techniques, communication, social media platform setup, and monetisation strategies.

The programme aimed to empower young people in Alexandra to use smartphones not only for entertainment, but as tools for storytelling, entrepreneurship, and income generation.

Two participants were recognised for their outstanding performance during the workshop:

Thembalakhe Makwasa — First Place and Kganya Kekana — Second Place.

Speaking about the initiative, Mogotsi said social media has become “the new TV,” creating opportunities for young creators to build careers from digital content.

“It is important for upcoming content creators to see this as an opportunity to make a living out of it. A lot of content creators are making money from the content they create therefore I see it as a chance for the youth of Alex to take advantage of this and learn how to monetise their work in order for them to earn a living from it,” he said.

He added that growing up in Alexandra inspired him to launch programmes that create positive change within communities, while also thanking the City of Johannesburg for supporting the initiative.

First-place winner Makwasa said the workshop taught him the importance of consistency and treating content creation like a business.

“I learned a lot from the workshop. What stood out for me was that I have to treat my brand like a business and also the importance of consistency,” he said.

Second-place winner Kekana described the workshop as a valuable learning experience for new creators trying to understand the fast-moving digital space.

“I’ve gained so much knowledge and understanding of what it means to be a content creator and how it can be a successful career choice and lifestyle,” she said.

The “Think Bigger” initiative continues to promote digital literacy and economic opportunities for young people in Alexandra and surrounding communities.
