A quiet Saturday afternoon exploded into horror at Nkuna Kraal Mall when a domestic dispute between two police officers turned into a deadly spectacle of rage and retribution.

Witnesses say the female victim, a Sergeant stationed at Beit Bridge Port of Entry, was enjoying the day with her six-year-old child and two adults when her estranged husband — also a Sergeant, attached to the Thohoyandou K9 Unit — confronted her. The couple had reportedly been separated for seven months.

What began as a heated argument ended in cold-blooded violence. The husband allegedly pulled a service firearm and shot his wife in the upper body at close range, in full view of bystanders and the child.

Before he could escape, furious community members chased him down, beat him, and set him ablaze next to his vehicle. The car went up in flames, reduced to a smouldering shell. Both the gunman and his victim died on the scene.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the killings, calling for peaceful resolution of disputes and urging SAPS members to use free counselling and wellness programmes instead of resorting to violence.

Police have opened two murder cases and are hunting for those involved in the mob attack. Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Stanley Chauke at 072 554 3141, call Crime Stop at 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS app.

Investigations continue.
