A Soweto Woman Pool Champion’s dreams to represent South Africa at this year’s World Blackball Championships 2022 may be dashed if she doesn’t raise enough money to go to Morocco.
Beatrice Monyake (41) has qualified to represent South Africa at the World Blackball Championship in Tangier, Morocco from the 8th to 15 October 2022.
However, Monyake does not have the money, sponsorships or even government support to ensure she travels to North Africa.
“It’s always an honour when I am called to represent my country at international Pool events.
” But it’s a struggle as the game is not properly recognized and sponsored to enable those taking part to get support and sponsorships.
“So for us we are forced to use the little money we save to pay for ourselves even though we carry the country’s emblem and flag high in those events.
“My wish is for government and private sectors to come on board and rally behind us to ensure we make our country proud at the international competition,” Monyake said.
“Pool is already a popular sport in the country especially in poor suburbs and villages, and government support to grow this and professionalize it, may actually assist in other social ills like poverty crime, and unemployment,” she added.
Monyake will be the first black woman to go represent South Africa if she gets a chance to go to Morocco in October.
The 41yr old mother of one started playing pool as a hobby for fun in 2007 in Orlando East, and it stuck.
Since then she never looked back and has won many competitions around Soweto and Johannesburg.
She is the current reigning Soweto Ladies Champion.
This is not the first time Monyake would be representing South Africa internationally.
She took part in the event Africa Pool Championship Cup in Zambia in March this year where she finished 5th in the whole of Africa.
To go to Morocco Monyake needs about R50 000 for flight tickets, food and accommodation for about a week from the 5th to the 17th October.
Even though games start from 8th to 15th, she has to travel at least two days before to acclimatize and get final preparations.
“I am appealing to anyone for donations, especially businesses and government to enable me to join the team in Morocco.
“The support would be greatly appreciated.”
