While many kids her age from Alex mostly play football, Kgaugelo Paulinah Meso (9) has already made a name for herself with karate.
And Kgaugelo has also made her mother proud with her skills.
Dikeledi Meso (34), originally from Moketjie Ga-Moribana in Limpopo, is a proud mom who is in a karate fraternity.
Kgaugelo recently won bronze and a certificate in a tournament organised by Quan Wessels.
She said she joined Quan Wessels, based in Sunninghill, due to bullying at school and on the street.
“We attend on Saturdays morning. I remember when I first got there, I was so scared and excited.
“I had mixed emotions, but my mother gave me courage to be strong and to have confidence in myself.
“It wasn’t easy, I must say, but I got used to it and it became easy and fun.”

She says the tournament was so exciting and that she has learned a lot, including discipline.
“I look forward to more medals and I certainly think that someday I will have an orange belt and other colours,” she hopes.
Kgaugelo says her small size makes kids her age think they can bully her.
” I now believe when they say dynamite comes in small packages.”
She thanks Afrika Tikkun for giving her the opportunity to become a member of Quan Wessels.
