A 19-year-old Tadiwa Matetakufa became the 20 000th person to be jabbed at the Zwartkops Drive Thru Vaccination Site in Centurion.
“Yes…Yes…it’s done,” said the teenager who has autism.
His mother, Susan Njanji, from Johannesburg said: “We were taken by surprise when we were told that Tadiwa was number 20 000. It feels so special and it’s an honour and we are all relieved that the young man is now also protected.”
“Tadiwa was very anxious when we got here. It took a lot of cajoling and convincing by vaccinator Dr Shouneez Omar,” said the site’s Yusuf Abramjee.
Dr Omar said: “What a lovely young man. He is now smiling and celebrating the fact that he got his J&J.”
A gift hamper from Amka Products was presented to him.
Abramjee said he hoped that the 25 000th vaccine will be administered next weekend.
The site,Tshwane’s first drive thru, which is in a partnership between the community and the Gauteng Government, opened 36 days ago.
Premier David Makhura and Gauteng Health MEC, Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi, visited the Zwartkops site repeatedly and praised the volunteers for the excellent work.
