Dikeledi Priscilla Meso (33), initially fell in love with karate in elementary school.
Because her mother neither believed in her, nor supported her, she gave up hope and moved away from karate.
Meso is one of the women chosen by Africa Tikkun for martial arts training in Sunninghill.
The children of the women attend the afternoon classes at Africa Tikkun in the Alexandra branch.
The mother of two, Meso, who is currently in Alexandra, grew up in Moletjie Ga-Maribana in Limpopo Province.
She says that except for self-defense, karate helps her manage her temper and stress.
Her daughter, Kgaugelo (8), who attends primary school in Skeen, was also selected to take self-defense classes with her.
She says that she will do everything necessary to support her child, no matter the circumstances.
“My coach, chef, inspired me and my boyfriend is so supportive of me because he also did karate.”
She has a lot of faith in male-dominated sport. “I just want to see myself traveling and helping other women to do self-defense.”
His advice to other women: “Always have courage in whatever you do, believe in yourself and your children’s dreams. Don’t ever undermine the dreams of your kids.”
